When I started surfing in the late 70's, there weren't too many girls out surfing so women like Rell Sunn were important to us as role models for us to look up to. She was the ambassador of Aloha and always in our hearts.

I wish I had a chance to meet her. My friend Scott McLean Huehulani Ross posted an article regarding the upcoming anniversary of her passing. What a beautiful person.

This is a very nice website. Rell was my adopted sister. She lived across the street from me on Ala Poko Street.I knew all of her family except her dad. We used to joke about her family all the time. There was Rella, Nella, Martha,Bella and Akbar. Bella and Akbar were Nella's two Afgan dogs. Her older sister whose name I have forgotten was married to A Waianae police officer. I also knew Jan but when I left Waianae, Jan was only 4 years old. Rell has always been in my mind and my memory. Have a great day.

Thank you Auntie Rell, you're Aloha lives on. I've had the honor of surfing and playing ukulele. God Bless for your contribution to surfing and always being there for the local keiki's.

Rell was such a caring friend,I miss her still. I treasure the memories of excursion such as hiking into the valley to collect plants for our home gardens, and the trips to the pond for shells, and just hanging around.

Best of wishes to Jan and ohana.

I have been blessed to meet Jan and Tony in Southern California through our daughter's high school volleyball team. They are a wonderful family! Rell raised a very special daughter and she would be very, very proud of her grandchildren!

Mahalo!!!

A friend from Maui just sent an image of Rell as a part of her SUP yoga ladies group. I had not thought of Rell for a long time but it brought back many emotions I was feeling for her at the time of her illness. Now my own wife struggles to survive this dreaded disease and I have to say that how Rell handled her disease gives me strenght to endure this process. She was a beauty to behold in all ways and it brought Aloha and Hawaii close to my heart!
