Just sitting here on computer and wondered if I could find out where the Tolovana was. It was kind of sad when I read it was scraped in 75. Well if Butch Walker is out there drop a line, thanks for getting me out of the boiler room when I first came aboard. What a trip. I might have stayed in if I had got a different ship.

My years in the Navy were interesting to say the least. I was assigned to the USS Tolovana right out of San Diego boot camp. Came on board June 28th 1968a FN and made MM2 a year before I left on January 2, 1972 with a 3 month early out. Met a lot of great guys, got into my share of trouble, but made it through the was a better person. As I look back I realize there would have been no way I would have visited so many places had I not enlisted. I really enjoyed liberty in Sasebo Japan and looked forward to it on every cruise. I would probably stayed in had in not been for a Main Propultion Assistant Warrent Officer who showed me and others how ugly serving under a tyrant can be. He even changed some lifers minds about staying in.

I just published a novel, The Monkey Toy. It is a thriller in a military setting. I drew upon my experiences in the Navy to add realism to my book. The story begins during the Korean War, when a Navy pilot collides with an unknown aircraft. A deadly component from the crash lands on a remote island beach, and remains there until it is discovered decades later. The story rapidly progresses to present day, when U.S. Navy sailor, Randy Farren finds the round, rose-colored object on an uninhabited Korean island, and begins experiencing headaches, hallucinations, and nightmares. This thriller follows the journey of the mysterious object, and explores the effects it has on everyone who tries to possess it. Insanity, murder, government conspiracies, and hints of humor and romance are all included in this race against time, as the fate of civilization hangs in the balance. I think you may enjoy reminiscing about Sasebo and other ports of call. I hope it brings back fond memories. Available on Amazon.com in paperback and soon Kindle ebook format.

I am doing a little historical research on the Tolovana and her Vietnam service. If anyone has any information on Tolovana's cruises between April 1970 and February 1971, I'd greatly appreciate it. I served aboard USS Perry DD 844 from Dec. 1971 through June 1973. We operated close to the DMZ and left the gun line for "gas, bullets and groceries" every couple of days. Thanks to our fleet logistics support ships for being there - you all did a great job.

Have a lot of good memories during my time on the Tolovana. I wouldn't want to do it again though. Mostly remember Liberty with Randy Byrd, Waldo, Gabby and Saunders, all great guys and hope they are doing well.
