Comments:
Today we stood out front of St. Helena's taking photos, sizing up the satisfied customers as they departed, and watching to see where to enter what turned out to be a fabulous family-style feed. We started with salads--shredded lettuce, pasta, fresh fruit, and jello--which we took to tables where eight and more were seated. As we ate, we met new friends--some from the area, some (like us) who had to drive a bit to get here. Our empty plates were cleared by attentive and congenial hosts--young and not-so-young (but all good looking!)--and then the platters and bowls were brought in: turkey piled high, dressing, (real) mashed potatoes, rolls & butter, and side-dishes of gravy and cranberry sauce. We helped ourselves to generous portions and cleaned our plates. Although we were plenty full, there were offerings of pie: the season's first pumpkin, chocolate, blueberry, apple, sour cream & raisen--who could resist! Hot coffee was offered, received, and sipped as we sat back to hear tall tales from our co-diners. We were full as ticks, and thought we'd never be hungry again, but writing this now makes me want to go back for just a wee bit more of that tender turkey. Fall suppers--they're a good thing.
