I walked on board the night before Sara left for Viet Nam, and got stationed at Cubi Point P.I. the day before Sara left to go home and dry dock. It is hard to believe it has been 45 years since I first laid eyes on her at 11:30p.m. April 10, 1972. I left the Pilippines in 1974 and got stationed on the Big E.

Got on board while in dry dock Nov. 73. I thought i had been sent to hell. 43 months later I was walking off trying to figure out where the time had gone and now over 42 years later since i first laid eyes on her its hard to fathom it all. Since I worked on the flight deck I witnessed alot of sad things from losing a A-6 off the starboard bow cat to a crashing vigilante during night ops.

Just ran across this web site, it's 5/27/2015. It's been a lot of years since I was attached to Sara. Sitting here trying to figure out where has the time gone. I now have 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. When I flashback on the time I was on Sara and away from family, some are good memories some are great memories others just make you wonder how did I survive? Thank you for letting an old sailor flash for awhile.

Loved Navy air and those F8 crusaders coming aboard but the liberty on the Med cruise was the best of my whole Navy career. One night we had a straggler come aboard and the LSO did not turn off the meatball. The aircraft pancaked on another but arrested and sent a sheet of fire down the deck that killed three crew. The next day they were throwing planes off the deck and by noon full ops again and the previous day they were fully armed which might have sunk the ship. Since all we did was observe and had few responsibilities it was as close to a cruise ship for us as a real one. CVA 60 was literally a spaceship with all the skills necesary to populate another planet...........cheers to all who served on this great ship and thanks for all the great memories only a 20 yo could have in such an environment.

I am so very proud to have served on board such a long lasting navy vessel with so much heritage and history. At first I was really scared to have served on board an aircraft carrier following a cruiser ( USS Gallery FFG-26) out of Pascagoula, MS; But now I am really honored that I have now especially now that she will go down in our history books for many of our new generation of children to learn about her and her history. I am really glad to have served on board "Sara". I will always remember the song titled "Sara" to keep her in mind of Saratoga. It makes me choke up when I hear that song.I will always be proud to say I served on board Saratoga CV-60 for the rest of my life. Fair Winds and Following Seas Saratoga CV-60. You definitely deserve to R.I.P. Many blessings..
