Hello Tim, It has been many years since I have visited your Battle Abbey site, and thus had exchanged Emails with your father Ivor. I just wanted to say thanks for continueing your father's hard work that was so meaningful to him and others. I understand what it meant to him and your family connection to Battle Abbey. I myself grew up next to a historical old resort hotel. By old, it did not compare to yours but although built in 1901, the hotel and surrounding town has a very interesting history being a major gambeling center during the time all gambeling was outlawed. I played on the huge grounds as a kid. Anyway, I just wanted to say keep the site up for your father's and your own familie's history, and many others enjoy it greatly. Oh, I sent to your father back around 2003 the Epitaph of Travers the Battalion Chief and Warrior of William the Conqueror. My own 26th multi-great grandfather. ~ Ron Travis Message Number: 48 - Thursday, November 19, 2009 18:10:51 GB [IP = 81.191.7.56] -Norway ![]()
My great great grandparents, Ann and Moses Sellman lived at the gatehouse and lodge during the last quarter of the 19th century. One of my uncles and his wife, Harry and Isabella Sellman were gatekeeper and guide in the early 20th century. Nice site. Brought back a lot of good and happy memories. You see I too have a special link with the Abbey. My grandparents Phil & Jack Mepham were 'custodians' during the 50s & 60s and I was born in the gatehouse July 31st 1955. spent every easter, summer & christmas holiday there whilst I was growing up. It was the greatest playground in the world (after the visitors had left and the gates were closed). Have to see what photos are left in the family, scan them and let you have a look Message Number: 45 - Thursday, September 3, 2009 06:09:41 GB [IP = 86.129.141.182] -United Kingdom ![]()
