My 10 year old son has been studying with the Sensei since my son he started Shotokan 4 years ago. What an amazing education this has been for our family to watch a master teacher at work and watch his guiding hand on our son and his fellow students. We finished another amazing weekend training with Sensei today. At the training I had a chance to view a copy of the book and was thrilled by what I read. The prose are clear and smart and the author has elicited a detailed and absorbing history from the Sensei that is personal and almost intimate. This is not a book written by a synchophant, but by a thoughtful writer whom created an environment where these recollections seem unforced and meditative. I was especially happy to have found none of the sentimentality that colors many such books. Because of this, the last lines left me touched by their intimacy, honesty and generosity. This book is a "class act" as is the Sensei. I ordered my first copy as soon as I returned home and expect to order many more. Thanks to you all for this fine work.

I admire Sensei Kawasoe's dedication and technical expertise in educating the Karate World in the true spirit of Shotokan Karate. Though I am not a pure shotokan student, I have always admired the Shotokan way of karate techniques and philosophy. I have in my own collection some of Sensei's Kawasoe's Instructional Karate DVDs which I purchased not too long ago through the Shotokan Karate Magazine by Sensei John Cheetham.

I was so inspired by reading the book. It is so interesting to read the personal thoughts and experiences of the Master whom I am lucky enought to have teach me occasionally. I have attended many of Courses and and never imagined that there have been times when Sensei has felt much the same I during his early days of training that I do now. I came to karate at a very old age for a beginner - and female at that - but I really enjoy the challenge of trying to continually improve. It has been a lifestyle change for me. Thank you so much for the book - it has been such an insight and a REAL pleasure to read. JENNIFER.

This is a must for all serious Karate-ka. Sensei’s dedication, struggles and humour is apparent throughout. One of the best so far by Dr Layton, can not wait for Volume 2.

It's excellent to have Clive Layton's recent research and scholarship available in these books. I hope it will not be long before Kawasoe Vol.2 (which is when most western karateka will have known him) is published. Also, Clive's 4 out-of-print books from the 1990s would be well worth reprinting after suitable updating.

In my opinion, the most enjoyable of Dr Layton's books so far - congratulations.

Read the book in a oner. Sensei's fantastic and indeed very modest personality shines through. Hope next installment mentions Scotland karateka more. He is well loved up there. If Sensei wants to come golfing in Spain, I can recommend a few really good sushi restaurants down my way (Benahavis, Malaga).
