I was looking for information on Camp Shanks, NY as that was there my Dad deployed for Europe in WWII. I found some unit information to be sure. I had no idea the site was put together by a veteran of Viet Nam. My husband served two tours there. Your song encapsulates where he has been in and out of since PTSD has surfaced in his life in 1988. Now he has Agent Orange Cancer which has changed his life again. I am also a Vet dealing with PTSD but I did not serve there. Your song helps to understand. Sincerely, Mary E. Hoettels LTC Retired PS Our daughter is in Irag - she too has Irag. I enjoyed your site! Your Uncle Francis and Aunt Lois are also my Uncle Francis & Aunt Lois!!! (SO I'm guessing somehow we are related!) Lois is my Grandmother's sister. My Grandmother's maiden name was Laura Catherine Deringer. Her married name after that was Pemper. It was neat to see some current pictures of Uncle Francis & Aunt Lois! I haven't seen them in years!! When my grandmother passed the family's communication kind of fell apart! As this veteran's day draws closer, I am once again thinking about Nam and how it has affected my life. Someone recently asked me if there was much about the war that I remembered, and I guess there's alot about it that I can't forget. From first arriving in country in 1966 to coming home to a country where I wasn't sure where I fit in in 1967. No welcome home ceremonies. My dad telling me to just say I was "overseas" if anyone asked because of the mood of the country at that time. I remeber getting my Bronze Star and Army Commendation medal with V device in the mail and not telling anyone , including my parents, about it two months after I had been discharged from the Army. I think I'm about ready to get them out of the drawer that they've been in for all of these years and maybe frame them. Always read sites like your's reverently. I was never based in Viet Nam but flew numerous flights in and out, including Pleiku AB, in a C-141. Very nicely done, and I will pass along to others. The great majority of our countrymen dont realize the sacrrifices made by vietnam veterans which continue to this very day. Thank you for your work to present their stories for public reflection.
