Hey Pete and Danny, BT1 got your money. LOL He sure fooled you guys. What was his name kind of like a stud-der to it. 75 to 79. I sure enjoyed that ship when it was anywhere except Brooklyn, We broke down once in Ft Lauderdale FL. St Thomas was nice. Found this sight by accident. The Dyess was my first ship. Came aboard in Dec '77 till decommission. Was a Torpedoman striker. Did a lot of growing up an the Dyess as I was 17 when I got there. Stayed in the Navy for 13 years, leaving as a FC1. I changed rates in '86. Fair winds and following seas to all the Dyess Shipmates!

This ship was my first one when I entered the navy at the young age of 17. I was on it from 1977 to 1981. I was on the skeleton crew when it was decommissioned. This is fantastic and exciting that I stumbled across this website by accident. Would love to hear from fellow ship mates from that time period. Those years were some of the most fun and exicting times I had in the Navy. Message Number: 151 - Thursday, January 12, 2012 20:02:39 PST [IP = 64.12.116.12] -United States ![]()
Greetings. Was just reviewing my late father's service record and find he was assigned to DYESS DD 880 for duty about August 1945 when he was RdM1c. John W. DeWITT, Sr. 12 JUN 1922 - 09 FEB 2002 Dad enlisted USN before WWII in September 1940 and retired in 1969 as Master Chief Radarman. Dad became a Sr. only when I arrived 1954. Throughout most of WWII Dad was assigned to light cruiser Marblehead CL 12; initially in Asiatic Fleet. I believe it's likely Dad was assigned to DYESS for only a short time then soon transferred back to Marblehead. His final ship was Brooke DEG 1 (plankowner) and I believe his final duty station was in San Diego where I think he was CMAA for a year or so of relative ease at a small base ... I think it may've been ASW or similar. Often to excess on both counts, he drank & chased skirts; each into his seventies. Parts of his service record not clearly legible & are difficult for me to interpret. Message Number: 150 - Friday, January 6, 2012 15:34:13 PST [IP = 99.196.32.59] -United States ![]()
