Request 'Can You Help'  with  the three photographs.  I know Billy Cave's next door neighbour and asked her if she could help by  passing on the three photos. Billy's next door neighbours  uncle also worked at Steetley, then who didn't. Some of you may remember him as Charlie 'Fussells', his real name was Charlie Lawson.  I know why he was nicknamed 'Fussells', unfortunately I am not in a position to explain why. Well not yet.

Anyway back to the photographs: The one with Billy Cave sitting on the bench is as follows.

Back row, L to R; Terry Vasey, Ken Willey, Frank Connor (Pre Moustache), Louis Greaves, Jimmy Harker directly behind Tommy Hughes, Alan Watt, Alan Howard & Jimmy Lindsay. Front row L to R; Ernie Hildreth, Harry Gutteridge, Billy Cave, Jimmy Cuthbertson & Harry Metcalf.

It must be noted that my own father worked at Hartlepool for 20 years and served on the same ship, HMS St James during the war as the Tommy Hughes mentioned above. Although HMS  St James was a small escort destroyer it wasn't until they both began working at Steetley that they realised they had both served on it at the same time.

Anothe interesting fact or two is that the bench they are sitting on was brought in for some 1950's function and was one of a pair. I remeber seeing a photograph of them outside of the canteen. Once it was transfered to the electic shop  and not in use during the day it became the shift electrician's nightshift bed!  I do believe it ended up in Peterlee at one particular shift electrians back garden. Is that right Barry.

Have you given up - nothing new for a  while...................................

Keep it going please, we need it!

Hello,
I'm a photography student currently doing a research project on Steetley, I've found this website is a very useful resource. Thanks so much!
Also, I've been trying unsuccessfully to trace the plaque from the site from when it was a battery, if anyone has any information please don't hesitate to contact me. If anyone has any additional information about the site the same goes.
Thanks so much and I hope to hear soon.
All the best,
Lucy

Great idea to have a dedicated web site on Steetley.  As the main employer in town it holds thousands of stories and was the springboard to many a career.  I remember more about Steetley than any other place I have worked since.  Probably because it was in the blood!  Being on site from 2 months old till I left the place at 29 years.

I find it quite sad to see the old place when we return to the town, so pleased you have gone to the trouble and hard work of collating the data and gathering all the old pictures and stories.

I particulaly like to Rogues gallery and would love to see it extended to include a "Where are they now section".  One of the photos on "D" shift page of my old mentor  & buddy Brian Laughton is actually "E" Shift and not "D".  If you remember there was an additional shift added to enable continental shift patterns.  Brian, Kenny Liddle (then "Mad" Mick Parker) and myself were on "E"shift. 1982-90.  If you manage to get Mick Parkers permission to release the "tales of E" shift I can let you have some real cracking stories - mostly at Mick's expense as Brian did like to see him suffer!

Reply to 'Anscor N'

I seem to remember the 6? ditties and they lurk somewhere in my general files. JF's 'Lifetime under the Chimney' is scheduled to appear as an element in the 1990's pages.

Your ideas for the humour section has been incorporated and will be expanded with a few anecdotes. THERE MUST BE A GREAT NUMBER OF STORIES OUT THERE - if you enjoy the site then please send me some for inclusion. The guestbook will receive Private Messages (not seen by other people) for me to include.

What a find – here I am surfing tnet and what do I find? A goldmine of memories Steetley in all its glory great stuff!

Although I worked (went) there for years and thought I new most of it I certainly learned a thing or two when I read the history. Keep up the good work.

Nice to see Kungys cartoon rats made it onto the site so does this mean his cartoons will soon follow – that would be nice. I suppose it would be far too risqué to put up the excellent but smutty Wan***enes. And Didnt Geoff Four Bags Burton, and come to think of it John Fawcett adopt a bardic stance and compose some poetry. That would add a bit of class to the site. JFs was something like The Smoke Goes up the Chimney Just The Same, and Burtos was a run down on everyone who worked there at that particular moment. If my memory serves me right they were pretty good and pricked a few balloons, mine included.

Did anyone else see the photo of the Flying Gynaecologist (Les Henson), in the paper recently. Isnt he grey. He still retains that same porno star tache, which was still black. I hear he is plying his trade as a Lab Technician at Dyke House school and is, wait for it Billy the inimitable sulk Nutley's boss. Thats a bit of a turn up eh.

Eh I could go on and on keep it up – whoever you are although I do have my ideas
