Your website is much appreciated. After serving on Saipan, he sailed with the Independence as part of the Magic Carpet fleet. Do other records exist of the trips that the Independence took as part of that end of the war effort. Before he died, my father spoke often about the Independence. Since so many war records were lost in the St. Louis fire, any information such as that on you website is a precious link to those years. Thank you for your service. My father in-law was a tail gunner for the Shademaid in a tbf avenger. His name was Staford E Hardwick. He has since passed on Nov. 11th 2009 in Bourne Mass. Being a world war two buff,I have enjoyed going though his paper work and pictures while he was in the navy. The most interesting was a book Shademaid by I.H."Hebe" Lee. I have said to my wife Sandra, "Chapps" youngest daughter, that the USS Independence being the first night carrier and the Shademaid the first night fighter group would make a fantastic movie for historic reasons. I close by thanking everyone from the USS Independence and its support groups for helping Chapp make it though the war. With out them I would not have been able to meet him or marry his loving daughter. Once again I thank you. James Connell Message Number: 98 - Friday, January 6, 2012 15:37:47 CST [IP = 68.231.167.143] -United States ![]()

I went on board the "Mighty I" on July of 1943. Shortly after the Japs surrendered and we dropped anchor in Tokyo I remember heading up the Colombia river for Navy day, October 1945. I had the privelage of watching the final F6F Hellcat depart from the Independence. I remember it like it was yesterday, watched that thing take off thought for sure it was going to prune the top off some pine trees in the distance. What a sight. I departed the Navy on Feb 25th 1946 and started my 35 year career with the United States Post Office. I currently reside in Yakima WA with my beautiful wife Betty we have been married for 65 years. I feel privelaged to have been a member of the crew. Message Number: 95 - Saturday, December 17, 2011 19:51:06 CST [IP = 75.138.244.143] -United States ![]()
