Hi my name is Patricia I am looking for any record or stories involving my Dad Patrick J Browne. He was a crew member I think in 1960. I have photo's of him and other crew members, he was a Officer an Electric engineer. He would of just got out of the ESB and was in Irish shipping from the age of 19 to 24. If anyone can help me with some information about his time in Irish Shipping Ltd. I would be grateful. Thank you.

To Denise Hearne Connor Good Morning Denise, It may be of interest to you that I sailed with your father on the Irish Oak When the conversion on her from steam to diesel was completed a full crew joined her in South Shields on the 20th October 1959. Your father Paddy was a young AB, your grandfather John Joe was the Bosun and I was a first trip apprentice. John Walsh and Jack and Paddy Duffin were also there. Captain Jack Lee was the Master followed by Captain Johnny Poole The first trip was to Philadelphia, the second to Baltimore and the third to New Orleans loading for Irish and UK ports. The rest of our time on board was trading up the Great Lakes The next time I met him he was a pilot and that was in Passage East in 1978 when I was serving on the Irish Naval vessel Grainne Your father was a gentleman, full of fun, always in good humour, was a great help to me when it came to seamanship and manys a time he cut my hair I have fond memories of the Irish Oak,she was a happy ship and it was crew members like your father and John Walsh that made her so. I spent forty one years at sea ending up as Master on Irish Ferries Normandy before retiring in 2000. I spent a further seven years with Waterways Ireland as Inspector of Navigation and still do a bit of summer work on the passenger vessels on the river Shannon operating out of Athlone where I live. No doubt he remembers me. Give him my kindest regards John Gillespie
