With ref to my email query of 9 August 2009 concerning the Dublin School of Navigation and Seamanship, I received an answer from Pat O’Halloran, quote:“ I with ISL from 1966 to 1983 with a brief spell in B&I and on the Aran Island ferry, Naoimh Eanna. I was known as Swords and was an engineer…..I work near Eden Quay and strolled down there today. The business's have few numbers but counting back from No. 21 (only it and 25 numbered) it appears to be the Salvation Army. It was previously the Stella Maris mission to seamen. It is on the corner of Eden Quay and Marlborough Street, a fine stone building. It is next to a hotel, was Daly's in our day, done a lovely steak and French fried onions in the 70's when such things were rare. If you go to the National Archives website and view the 1911 census for Dublin you can see what was on Eden Quay, unfortunately it does not give numbers on the ones I saw.” Unquote. I can remember the Stella Maris. I did check the 1911 census and very interesting it was. However it appeared only to give information on actual persons in residence and not in business. I have just re-read a book I bought many years ago in Dublin: “Shadow and Sun” by Neil Campbell (published by Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1947) and in it the author writes: “In my native city I obtained my second mate’s square-rigged certificate, after three weeks at the excellent school on Eden Quay.” This was in 1914. Then in the early 1920s, he writes “…I set about preparing, at that excellent school on Eden Quay, to pass for square-rigged extra-Master.” But then his father died in South Africa and so he just sat and obtained his Master’s square-rigged certificate. So in the 1920s the school still existed but when did it close? And can anyone tell me when the one at the West Pier, Dun Laoghaire opened?

Fleetwood Nautical College Hi to all I wish to make contact with anyone who graduated from Fleetwood Nautical College (Radio, Navs etc) over the years. I am organising a re-union in early September 2010 at Fleetwood and hope to be able to give everyone the opportunity to attend. So, if you know of anyone whom you know studied at FNC please pass -on this message and my e-mail address. I graduated from FNC in June 1969 with PMG & BOT Radar Certs and after a short spell as Junior R/O with Marconi I went foreign-flag starting with Israel's Zim Line based in Haifa, Israel (interesting times to say the least - lifeboat and fire drill were something else given the high risk of attack and armed boarding; the Somali Pirates wouldn't stand a chance). I look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers me and/or who has info about FNC. Best wishes agus slan! James Henry Clarke (Isle of Anglesey, Wales)

Very sad to hear of the death of Tony Goodison to-day. Tony was from Wexford and worked with Tony Hall at Rosslare Ship Repairs some years ago. R.I.P.
