Found your site today after my 2 year old golden retriever had a very bad reaction to his distemper vaccine this morning. He is finally sleeping and the swelling has started to subside - but it has been an exhausting day. I will report it to the drug company - and I will watch him for other potential side effects. I was relieved to hear my vet say that Rufus will not be receiving any more vaccines and the vet will write a letter to waive his rabies vaccination (yeah, it was that bad). It is going to be a long night as we continue to monitor him - but I think the worse is over. I book marked your site and will do some more reading - especially on the flea preventatives. I have not used them in years because it always seemed to bother my other dogs or make them lethargic - I just didn't have a good feeling about the stuff. I am also concerned about the heartworm preventatives - I have Rufus tested for heartworm yearly but again, have some concerns that just haven't been answered to my satisfaction. Than

My beautiful friend/companion Kerry died after being prescribed RIMADYL for unconfirmed arthritis by her once 'trusted' vet, I was given NO information about any Potential side effects,I only found out the facts 3 days after Kerry died when I researched it for myself.I'll never forgive myself for letting Kerry down by not doing the research before I gave her the pills that I'm 100% certain killed her,but if my veterinary had been doing her job properly I wouldn't have needed to do any research, I blame the veterinaries MORE than the drug companies as it is they that are not discussing the potential side effects with their clients, I believe the reason they dont pass on the information is because they know that most pet owners would not give deadly drugs to their precious companions if they were given the facts. It is the Law in the UK for vets to discuss any potential side effects with their clients but they still fail to do it and when a complaint is made to the RCVS all they get is a slap on the wrist, Kerry's vet was given 'advice' on client communication.

t saddens me to know that not only have we lost our beloved 5 1/2 year old yellow lab, Yogi, this summer due to Rimadyl, but that we are not alone, that many other pet owners have suffered as we have. This shouldn't still be happening to pet owners!

Our local vet prescribed Rimadyl to our 5 1/2 year old yellow lab in mid-June of this year for swelling & pain in his knees associated with torn ligaments. He said to us that there seems to be a slightly increased number of "reactions" in labradors from the medication, but that it was his opinion that this was because more labradors are put on the medication vs. other breeds. I asked if it was safe for him, as he never could tolerate even baby aspirin, it made him vomit. He assured us that it was different & should be well tolerated.

We saw a significant improvement in his mobility & were hopeful to be able to give him some physical therapy, getting him into better shape for his planned surgery to repair his torn ligaments. We took him back, two weeks after starting Rimadyl, as directed, for a blood test to check his liver & kidney function while on the medication & were given the all clear.

Four days after that blood test, Yogi began vomiting, ref

Our dog Willow was taken to our vet in the Monongahela Valley area on Nov. 21, 2008 and was prescribed Rimadyl 100mg. to help her with a little pain she was having in her hips. We thought that this medicine was like MSM or Glucosamine but were we ever wrong. Two weeks ago she was fine when the vet put her on Rimadyl for hip pain and only after a few weeks she started throwing up and bleeding from her nose, now what caused this to happen? I wonder! Once we got her to the hospital they put her on steroids plus had to give her blood transfusions because the drop of platelets in her blood was down to almost zero due to a reaction to the medicine which seemed to be the only reason at that time. After going back and forth to the hospital to see her in intensive care they said she was doing better even though she could hardly lift her head. Saturday morning the 13th. They called and said she was on oxygen and that she was slipping and needed another blood transfusion so we hurry to the hospital and she was just laying there hardly breathing. I brushed her head and she looked up at me with blood in her eyes and she was just hanging on. My wife was holding her face and kissed the top of her nose and h

Jean T,
You are a godsend. I had recently lost my 6 year old mix breed when I received a wonderful call from Jean. Her neighbors had found "Amber" and Jean took her in. Had she not found her way to Jean I can't think what might have happened to her. Thanks again for giving Amber such love and your continued dedication to helping keep dogs safe and happy.
Woof Woof,
Ryan

I have a now 6 yr old mini schnauzer Count"Basie" who just 2 years ago I almost lost to a vaccine- it was the worst experience. He went down as soon as he got the shot, immediately excreted his anal glands then threw up he went from bad to worse I had to rush him to emergency hospital he had gone into
DIC they kept him going with a plasma transfer
next day I had to transport him to the Copley Animal hospital he was there a week they too gave him a plasma transfer not really thinking he would survive - But miraculously he did.
Not as the same dog so to help him recover I now have "Duke" Ellington. I am very happy to say HE IS A SURVIVOR. Can never have another vaccine
I am not even sure if I should do heart worm.
Duke had his puppy shots but don't think I will ever vaccine him again. It's weird because Basie had his regular shots with no problem until that one.

While you had a bad experience, I would like to suggest to you that the Deramax that you used alleviated the pain your dog was suffering. Had you not given him the Deramax, he would not have lived as long as he did. My dog suffers from arthritis and I give this to her when I feel she needs it. She has been doing well, she is even a cancer survivor. She is 11 now and I know she will be gone in about a year, but I am glad I have had the Deramax to make her comfortable. Of course all medications have side effects, in both animals and people, but usually the benefits outweigh the side effects.
