A really interesting 'picture' of a charming village - which I'm hoping is one of my ancestral homes.

This is a great site I have enjoyed the history the pictures , in fact due in the fact my name is Barr I am a little biased , so on my to-do list I plan to go and visit this part of the world . I have been to Scotland once many years ago, but have never heard of Barr but thanks to your site I am delighted to say , so my next trip will be to visit your lovely part of the world . I was wondering does the family name Barr come from your part of the world . So for now I will keep on reading your site Many Thanks Kevin Barr

I remember the McHarg brothers well although I am slightly younger, and echo Hugh's memories of never ending hot summers and swimming in the Pot. Great days indeed ! I have many happy memories of growing up in Barr and of the wonderful characters who lived in the village . I would love to attend a reunion of ex Barr ites .( could be a great idea for your gala day ).

I left Barr in 1969 but Barr has never left me. Great website ! Great village !

I grew up in Barr in the fifties and sixties when summers were hot and lasted forever and winters were so cold we were cut off forever. That is how it seemed, although, no doubt the truth was somewhat different , but it definately was a privilege to have spent my childhood in such a magical place. Our playground stretched from the top of the "Screws" to the furthest edge of Changue forest and for miles of the Stinchar valley inbetween. I would love to write a book about those days but the fact that my indoor education probably suffered at the expense of my outdoor pursuits would make it an extremely difficult task. Many of my best memories involve the River Stinchar where every kid in the village learned to swim, we built rafts , fished ( legally and often illegally) and in winter skated on ice . The Gregg Burn was another source of fun where dams were built , "baggie minnies " were netted, and guddling for trout were popular pastimes. There was also a waterfall on the burn where salmon leapt on their way to the spawning redds.

If anyone reading this lived in the village at that time I would love to hear from them and share a few memories.

Gday Barr village,

I was just doing some research on this beautiful village which has my surname, I am told that my family has it's roots from here many years ago. My Mum and Dad  visited your village in the 1990's and said that we must go there when we go to the UK and we intend on doing just that, our goal being to renew our wedding vows on our 25th anniversary in 2014 in the Parish church. A little way off yet but thats the plan. We cant wait come over !

Regards Tony, Shirley,John and Mikiele Barr, Cairns,Australia
