Upon reporting to the 5/30 Artillery Bn in Vicenza in Dec 66, I was assigned as firing platoon leader, Bravo Battery.  After about a year in that position I became the battery XO and later the Bn CO offered me the BC position.  I accepted  with the plan to quickly make captain and continue enjoying life in Italy.  The Army had other plans and sent me to Vietnam before I could pin on my new rank.  Overall I have fond memories of my time in Vicenza.  It was a busy and fun time.  I would like to hear from anyone who remembers me as a second and first lieutenant in Italy.

Just mailed my membership dues and thought I would say hello to everyone.  I served in B/1/30 FA and then C/6/16 FA.  I have made contact with Andy Anderson, Dick Lacy and Ray Zugel.   It was good just to talk to them again and would like to communicate with everyone else.  I was going to attend the reunion but work will prevent me from going.  If anyone would like to contact me, my email address is casonrc@comporium.net.

I am curious to know if any of the German and Italian service vets of the 30th FA are interested in starting a "Member's History of their units. I have two histories started: one for B/1/30 and another for C/6/16th and they seem to be gaining some momentum. I am willing to start one for Italy and would be able to enter something to get it started. Unfortunately, I didn't serve with the 30th in Germany so I could post nothing on my own. If anyone is interested in starting a history, let me know and I'll tell you how to get it started.  Ray Z

p>For Jack, the hardcharging webmaster: I'm just checking in to see who has signed in lately and I have a couple of observations/questions.

  1. In the messages we get here I find no email addresses. Is there a way to show these so that people reading will know how to get in touch with each other?
  2. All the messages seem to be in the default, Size 1, type. For some of us this is really hard to read. Is there a way to make the displayed size larger? I would suggest Size three.
  3. Does any member of the Board have the responsibility to review the few messages we get and act on them?
  4. Thanks, Jack, for getting the Guest Book situation fixed.

For everyone: I am still looking for members of B/1/30  and C/6/16 from the Vietnam era. I have a Members's History started on Google Docs and would like to get your contributions. If you want to be involved, send me and email message at rjzugel@cox.net and I'll get you started.

Some of my fondest memories of a 20 year career were with the "Hardchargers" in germany.  Last Chance, Graf, Graf, Graf, and Sheridan Kaserene.

I was in the como platoon, RATT section.

Have checked out the sight many times, but this is my first time signing in.  Hope to see some other Ausburg guys post here.

p>Hello All,  Just to let all know we have a new Member,

Robert J Leonard Jr.

Sandwich, IL.

A Btry, 6/68-6/69

I am testing his e-mail address, and as soon as I am sure it is correct I will add it to the membership list.

Looking forward to seen everyone At Fort Sill this year, and who knows, I may even keep my mouth shut. (for the one's who know what how I am) this has been a very bad year for us, On the day I left the reunion, I received a call just before we left the hotel, and my wife told me my mother-in-law was not very good (I was not going to come as she was sick, she told me I had to go, so I went.) she passed away about the 6pm that day, and I was still a long way from home, that was Jun, July we had to put my father-in-law in a home as he keep running away, then found out my wife had more health problems, then in Aug I was at a Rest. and they gave me a glass of soda with some broken glass from around the rim, so had to have a scope to see if it did anything to me inside, Sept, found out I had Cancer, and they took out the tumer, Dec they said it was gone, last week they call me back in and said they found another problem spot so Tue 1/29 I had to go back in

Seems like 1969 was last week after visiting your website. I served as Chaplain's Assistant under Chaplain Hunt and Chaplain Newby on LZ Dolly for 1/5th. Chaplain Black, was Catholic Chaplain for 2/12th. These men covered both 1/5 and 2/12. Well I remember when the 155s came to LZ Dolly. Seeing your photos brought much of it back. And I remember the attacks on Grant, though I was grateful I was not present for those. I do remember the attack on LZ Dolly 26 MAR 1969. That was a long night. After Dolly, I was reassigned to DivArty. There I served under Chaplain Hosutt. Thank you for an awesome website. I plan on returning. Hope more of the Hardchargers will dig out more photos and images and memories to share. I am especially looking for images from LZ Dolly. Jason Holmes

As FDO in Tuy Hoa AO, well remember the "Balls of the Eagle" s' contributions and close association with the 320th. (especially Cheo Rheo). May not be spelled properly but the "impact" remains.
