More on my naval service, I was born in 1927 in Manchester, and called for National Service in 1946, took a trade test in Devonport dockyard on the old monitor H.M.S. "Roberts" and served as an E.R.A. I spent a few months on H.M S."Valiant". Then did 20 months on the mineseeper H.M.S. "Seagull' doing sweeping of port entries etc, one thing I recently learned is that H.M.S "Seagull" was the first ship in the R.N. to be an all welded hull. My last six months in the R.N was as a 4th class E.R. A. on H.M.S. "Gambia" in and out of drydock in Devonport dockyard, working on boiler room maintenance. On leaving the R.N. I joined the Blue Funnel line and sailed on a variety of ships as an engineer, leaving them in 1956, and then immigrated to Vancouver Canada in 1957. I have been retired for over 20 years and recently found your web pages so will keep a watch out for more, Regards.....Cliff Hand Nice to hear from you Cliff, and I hope you can make contact with another ex Gambian in Canada, who I will prompt to look at the Guest Book so he can pick up your email address. Can I take it that you are happy to receive our Newsletter by email? Bill Hartland editor www.hmsgambia.com

As most of us are aware John Armitage, a founder member of the association, died in September. His widow Mavis has sent the association a donation of £100 in his memory as she knew John would have wished it. Discussion among committee members and with John's son Peter has led to the thought that the association should use the money to set up a scheme of some sort in John's name. One suggestion (and only a suggestion) made is to set up an award to the Top Cadet at TS Gambia. in the UK. I would welcome your ideas shipmates to assist in a decision being made at the 2012 AGM. Yours aye, John Andrews. Hon Secretary. Web Editor has made some amendments to the above, and would suggest an Honours Board be implemented to mirror the Honours Board in TS Gambia in New Zealand.

Further to the entry by the Hon Sec below, I am reminded that Tommy has now gone to join his old shipmate Jim Bailey who wrote to me shortly before he crossed the bar, asking about Tommy. Memories may be short on occasion, but, clearly Jim had an inkling that he wanted to connect with an old shipmate before he left us. Jim lived in Adelaide S.A. and Tommy in Cheshire, but, distance made no difference to the need to get in touch obviously.

On one of the pages with photos there was the question.Who is in the boats crew?
Thanks Alastair, but, could you define the picture gallery number for me so that I may add your observations to that particular picture? Kind regards, Bill Hartland editor www.hmsgambia.com
