Virgil, I graduated from CGUHS in 1963 and had always wanted to be a pilot. George Gomez Sr. gave me my first ride in his Super Cub when I was about 10. (He was flying his Bellanca Viking when he died in the mid-air).

I was in Air Force ROTC at ASU but they kicked me out of school. I was about to be drafted in the summer of 1966 so I joined the Army to be a helicopter pilot. I graduated from flight school in Fort Rucker, AL and two weeks later I was in Viet Nam as an rotary wing pilot with 220 hours under my belt. I arrived in VN on my 22nd birthday and 2 month later, the Tet offensive broke out. Those were exciting times.

FYI: Mike Bennet, class of '64 (his dad had a jewelry and watch repair store by the old A&W) and I lived across the hall from each other during primary flight training in Fort Wolters, TX, and we graduated in the same class. David Dial, also class of '63 (from Stanfield) came through flight school in '69 when I was and IP in TX.

Your story about your young friend Jim was very touching. Take care and thanks for the read.

Really enjoyed it. I have been seeing your posts on
classmates.com and have enjoyed the memories you bring up.
My older sisters and brothers went to CGUHS thru the 50's
and 60's and I graduated in 1972. If you remember the
Ridgways and Albert and Linda Snow, they are my brother and
sisters. Keep up the good work.
