Congratulations, you are a whiz to have discovered all these various lithophanes!
I thought they were only in Japanese china.
I must look more closely at my other china now.
So lithophanes can be on sides of china?
Some people were very innovative in coming up with this amazing idea.
I heard that Japanese teasets & china were given to servicemen on returning from war - do you know if this is correct?
It’s late here in Melbourne, Australia so I must go to bed, but will have a better look tmw. 😊

I have a small lithophane cup with initials JW and dates 1870-1911 on the outside. The lithophane is in the bottom of the cup. I have found a few the same on the internet, but no one seems to know who the bearded man in the lithophane is, or the reason for production of the cups. I am in the United States.

Some of the sitting nudes, especially those on what looks like ocean rocks, might be of ama divers, who dived nude. By the post-war period, the nudity was mostly for tourist attraction ;)

Absolutely Love this site! I found that I have a very unique Lithophane and did not even realize it. Please excuse my ignorance. I went to take pictures of it and discovered that I had a very unique sake cup. What an incredibly mix of cultures. Cowboy Santa on the front and the Geisha. Left facing "Common Geisha" at that. It is also marked on the bottom with a "M" inside a heart. I could not figure out how to send pictures. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your site. You truly can find beauty everywhere.

Stephanie

I was very pleased to discover your collection of Geishas! I have a an 88 piece set with the image of what you have listed as the "Elaborate Geisha" under rare and hard to find. I am interested in finding out more about my lovely Geisha and this set if you know anything more I'd be appreciative of the knowledge!

Thank you for the informative page. I have 2 Lithopane cups, one Dragon ware and a smaller sorta-satsuma cup. I didn't know about the complexity of designs within the cups, Again, thank you!
